The Grenada Chocolate Company was founded in 1999 by Mott Green, Doug Browne and Edmond Brown. They produce a range of high quality organic dark chocolate products in Grenada using fine-flavoured cocoa beans. It’s a very unique chocolate company for a variety of reasons. With regards to working practices, they operate fairer than fair trade working arrangements for their cocoa farmers. Also, they are one of the only small scale chocolate makers who produce fine chocolate where the cocoa grows – it truly is a tree to bar process.
The Grenada Chocolate Company was featured in a 2012 film called Nothing like Chocolate. Nothing like Chocolate is a feature documentary film about the politics of cocoa and chocolate. Directed by Kum-Kum Bhavnani, the film has won accolades and awards at a number of film festivals around the world. It’s an eye-opening must-see film that is definitely food for thought.
I met Mott at Chocolate Unwrapped 2012 and spoke to him about the Grenada Chocolate Company, as well as about their participation in Nothing like Chocolate. You can hear my interview with Mott by clicking on the play button below.
